Ten Reasons To Start Drinking More Water

Are you drinking enough water each day? According to the NHS Eatwell guide, we should all aim to drink around six to eight glasses of water a day to avoid dehydration. Low-fat milk, sugar-free drinks, tea and coffee all count towards the intake too. As well as keeping us hydrated and quenching our thirst, there are oodles of benefits that come from drinking water. Here are my top ten reasons to start drinking more water…   Aids weight loss Water has zero calories and zero sugars so it’s definitely the healthiest drink option out there. If you drink a glass of water before a meal it can suppress your appetite, meaning you won’t eat as much. Water can curb your cravings too, so if you find yourself reaching for the chocolate, try drinking a glass of water first.   Makes your skin look younger and healthier Water replenishes skin tissue meaning your skin may look more youthful with a radiant glow. It can also help to reduce puffy eyes.   Helps headaches Not drinking enough water can cause dehydration, and dehydration can cause headaches. Ensuring you drink enough water could mean you don’t get a headache at all. In fact, since I started making sure I drink lots of water throughout the day, I haven’t had to reach for the paracetamol.   Aids digestions Water helps the body to digest food properly and may prevent problems such as constipation. It could also reduce excess stomach acid.   Keeps the kidneys functioning Water helps to flush toxins out of the body and keeps the kidneys functioning as they should. It may even prevent kidney stones.   Improves concentration The brain is mostly made up of water so it goes without saying that it needs plenty of water to stay healthy. Staying hydrated can aid our memory, shift mental fatigue and improve our concentration.   Boosts energy If we don’t drink enough water we become dehydrated. Dehydration can cause tiredness and lack of energy. Therefore, if you drink plenty of water you’ll have more energy. More energy means we can work more productively and may even improve our exercise performance.   Improves our mood Drinking water can help to balance our moods and emotions, making us feel happier and less stressed. I’ve found that if I don’t drink enough water in a day I feel groggy and moody the next day.   Keeps joints healthy Our bodies use water to lubricate our joints, and it can help to prevent back pain and arthritis.   Saves us money As you’re drinking water there’s no need to buy other types of drinks. The money you’d usually be spending on fruit juices etc. could be put to one side and saved up, or used for something else.     Is anyone else off to get a big glass of water?
