One step at a time. Not a leap. Not a jump. Just one step at a time!
Sometimes, the pressures of life can get us down. Every day stresses are normal, and for the most part, we deal with the pressures and move on. But what if you are struggling to deal with the pressures? What if what seems like a small task to one person feels like a mammoth task to someone else? Or what if all the small tasks add up, making you feel like you’e drowning in pressures? What do you do then?
Those of you that know me or read my blog will know that I have recently taken a bit of a break from blogging. I wanted to rebrand and set up a new blog that I felt was more suited to my life. But this was a real struggle for me. Not because I thought of the rebrand as a huge unwanted task, but because I was struggling to cope with the pressures in my personal life.
Life was getting to me. Nothing was going right and I felt like I was drowning. I had suffered an ectopic pregnancy which left me distraught, my Endometriosis and PCOS were worse than ever, I was anxious all the time, and I had started having panic attacks. I was depressed and something as simple as getting out of bed in the morning became a huge task. Never mind actually attempting to function and get the new blog up and running!
It felt like the to-do list for the blog was endless and I really didn’t know where to start. My fiance, Chris, suggested I write down everything I needed to do. If I could physically see what needed doing, as oppose to remembering everything, then maybe the tasks would be easier to deal with. But the list stressed me out even more; there were too many things on it!
Then he said that I should go through the list and pick one thing that needed doing and forget about everything else on the list. So I did, one step at a time!
Later that week I found myself really struggling again. I had to make an appointment for something I really didn’t want to attend. When I tried to make the call it became too much and I dropped to the kitchen floor and had a panic attack.
When I told my mum what had happened, she told me to “just make the bloody phone call!” Tactful is not a word I’d ever use to describe my mother! I was shocked and wanted to cry because she was being mean to me when I was struggling. She went on to say that making the appointment and attending the appointment were two different tasks that should be dealt with separately, one step at a time.
In the space of only a few days, it felt like a huge weight had been lifted off my shoulders. By taking one step at a time, not a leap or jump, I managed to make a huge dent on my to-do list, make the phone call, and then attend the appointment, without feeling too anxious about it all.
If you ever find yourself in a situation that seems impossible to deal with, then maybe you could break the task down into small manageable steps too, like I did.
- Make a list of everything that has to be done
- Decide what needs doing first
- Complete the first task
- Move on to the next step
Just take it one step at a time because that’s really all we can do isn’t it.
Self-care and mental health are really important. It took me a long time to realise this. It is so easy to be swept up in life and it’s easy to forget about our needs.
