If you would have told me this time last year that I would be writing a post entitled ‘My Top 7 Benefits of Meditation’ then I probably would have laughed my head off. Meditation has been around for centuries but I think it is more relevant today than ever before. Twenty-first-century life can be all-consuming. Everybody is always busy and on the go and with the rise of social media we often don’t give our minds time to relax. I don’t know about you, but I got to a stage where as soon as I had any free time I’d immediately pick up my phone and start browsing through my various social media platforms. I might have thought I was relaxing by doing that, but in reality, I was just stimulating my already overly exhausted brain. I’ve only been meditating for a few months but I can honestly say it has been life-changing for me. I’ve had a few rough years with my endometriosis, infertility, and then having an ectopic pregnancy last year. I got to the stage where it felt like I was stuck under a dark cloud and I definitely couldn’t think straight. Meditation became a way for me to slow down and re-connect with myself. For me, it is all about relaxation, learning to observe and understand my thoughts, and it’s about gaining clarity. I no longer feel like I am stuck under a dark cloud. For the first time in a long time, I have some clarity and I am excited about life and my future again. These are My Top 7 Benefits of Meditation: 1. Improves Concentration I am more focused on my goals since I started meditating, and I have clarity about what exactly those goals are. For the longest time I was just going with the flow I think, but now I feel like I have some purpose. 2. Health Benefits Obviously, I am not a doctor, but from what I have read, I believe that meditation can help to reduce anxiety, lower a high blood pressure, improve the immune system, and increase energy, among other things. It has definitely increased my energy, and I am generally feeling more positive and full of life. I’m not as stressed as I once was either. 3. Increases Self-Awareness I know exactly who I am and what I want from life. Well, it only took 33 years to figure it out! Seriously though, I don’t think i’ve ever really known or understood myself before now. 4. Inspires a Healthier Lifestyle My mindset has changed. I no longer want to eat junk food or slob on the sofa eating cake after cake. Now, I actually want to exercise and to my surprise, I am enjoying it. I suddenly have an interest in the environment. I have no time for negativity or people that don’t make me feel good. Self-care is a priority and I won’t make any exceptions to that. 5. Improves Sleep If I meditate before going to sleep I have found that I fall asleep faster, and stay asleep longer. Well, that is if my little girl doesn’t interrupt that sleep by climbing all over me and squeezing into the middle of the bed! A lot of the time I actually fall asleep whilst meditating, especially if I am lying down listening to a guided meditation. 6. Increases Happiness For the first time in a couple of years, I can actually say that I am happy. I have definitely moved away from under the dark cloud that followed me around. Yes, I still have a ways to go health-wise, but I am no longer willing to let these issues bring me down. And anyway, leading a healthier lifestyle should help improve the symptoms of my endometriosis and PCOS. 7. Increases Creativity After meditating my head is full of ideas for the blog and where I want to go with my career. I always make sure I have a notepad and pen next to me so I can write down any divine ideas I have whilst meditating. So there you have it, My Top 7 Benefits of Meditation. Honestly, since I started meditating regularly I feel so much better. I understand that meditation may not be for everyone but I would definitely recommend giving it a try to see if it can help you in any way.
